How to Make Shai

Signature Milk Shai

What You'll Need:


  • 1 teaspoon House of Sadah spice blend
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon of your favorite loose black tea (or 1 tea bag)
  • Sugar to taste


Steps to brew Ethiopian shai:


  1. Pour 1 cup of milk into a small pot and add 1 tsp of the House of Sadah spice blend
  2. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a gentle simmer and small bubbles begin to form
  3. Add your favorite black tea
  4. Continue to simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes (or until the color deepens to a warm golden tone), stirring occasionally to prevent the milk from burning
  5. Strain into your cup
  6. Sweeten to taste and enjoy!


This recipe serves 1 cup (8oz or 12oz) of delicious shai.

Classic Shai

What You'll Need:


  • 1 teaspoon House of Sadah spice blend
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon of your favorite loose black tea (or 1 tea bag)
  • Sugar or honey to taste


Steps to brew your Ethiopian shai:


  1. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil
  2. Reduce heat and add 1 tsp of House of Sadah spice blend
  3. Let it simmer for 10 minutes (longer for a stronger flavor)
  4. Add your favorite black tea and simmer for another 3–5 minutes
  5. Strain into your cup
  6. Sweeten to taste and enjoy
